Natural Hair Do's

My speech teach Mr. Campbell announced from the first day of class how fascinating my hair is. I've been washing my hair every two weeks or so now and I have been trying my best NOT to tie it down into one style.
Each day is a new style and says something toward my outfit. I love this experimentation cause with my hair out on its own I'm challenged every day not to do the same thing I did yesterday! My mom hates when I do this but I love it! She says my hair own in its all mighty natural state is how "Mad Women" in Jamaica wear their hair... lol. Whatever!
The most I've gotten her to do is China Bump my hair or what you hair professionals call Bantu Knots. In the country, us Jamaicans refer to them as China Bumps and pronounce China "Chi-knee" lol. My late Grandma use to part her white hair and twist it and roll it into these bumps on her head. Its something I found funny before but the next morning when she took it down her hair was all wavy. Well for me Bantu Knots provide a thick coil that's springy and even tighter when I do it Jamaican style by twisting it first.

The best thing about my mom doing my China Bumps in my hair is that she got to use another Black Earth Product. She is stubborn and she has to use something before she believes in it. OR she'll believe in it if it was on one of her shows like Dr. Oz or the Doctors -__-
Anywaay she also thinks I ruined my hair...So now! She was combing my hair and praising how beautiful and long my hair still is and how I should show off my length and how no one knows how long and pretty my hair is because I wear it like rasta mad woman. lol.

The thing is that I'm happy with my hair and I no longer feel the need to show off my length like I used to. People who KNOW hair can look at my hair once and praise my length and bucket me with compliments. And if they don't know hair they'll think I cut it or I'm going natural, unbeknownst to them I've been natural all my life. I like keeping people guessing. As long as I'm loving my hair that's all what matters.
To me I have the best of both worlds. Long hair when I choose and short hair when I choose. And medium when I choose. Without cutting a strand! Wet/or Dry! Thats the POWER and CONTROL I have with my hair being natural! Do you have that authority with your hair?

Lots of my other styles come from the use of lots and lots of hair pins.
The products I use mostly are Curly Curl Cream and style N shine for my Bantu Knots.

The great thing is that I don't use this stuff daily. Once its in my hair I reactivate it by moistening my hair with water. It saves on the product too!

WASH N' GO with Natural Hair!

So idk about you, but I love the way my hair looks after its washed shampooed. As a photographer in love with texture I used to photograph the water droplets being held hostage in my kinky hair strands. Gravity only helped the look by giving me wet juicy curls down the sides of my face.

At the NAPPY HUTT, Trell another awesome hair stylist who is the master of pin-ups, was helping me give a full analysis of all the Taliah Waajid Products. And she mentioned one of them could help me obtain a wash and go style. My said YEAH RIGHT, CHILD BOO! This hair, after its washed it may look nice but it is not ready for the public. BUT, when I blow dry it my pretty curls are gone and i'm left with just POOF!

So today, or this morning rather, I washed my hair in the kitchen so that I would purposely be in my mom's way. She can't just stand there and watch me struggle so she helped move the water around as I washed. It was funny as I applied the herbal cleanser she was like whats that medicine?! LOL. And she began to talk smack about how the stuff I'm using is not worth the money and its just a gimmick for black people to buy...yadayada whatever! Suave never personified my scalp like Total Body Shampoo and Enhancing Herbal Conditioner. When I use that combination in my hair my hair speaks to me and screams I'm BACK! lol I think its so reassuring to feel what your hair products are doing I mean talk about confirmation in the best way ever.

Anyway here are all the proper steps on SHAMPOOinG your Natural Hair(or transition hair):

NAPPY HUTT HAIR CARE TIPS AND RULES

You do not wash hair! You shampoo hair. You wash clothes not hair.

How to wash Shampoo hair with Taaliah Waajid Products:

1.       Dampen hair and rinse out residue

2.       Saturate hair with herbal cleanser (green)

3.       Wash by using cushions of the fingers thoroughly through scalp. Start from crown to nape of neck.

4.       Rinse it out Luke warm never hot

5.       Apply the black earth shampoo  total body (purple one)

6.       Repeat steps 3 and  4

7.       Apply  enhancing herbal conditioner to the hair and massage through scalp for about 5 mins

8.       Shower cap over the hair

9.       Sit under the dry for deep conditioning for at least 30mins

10.   Rinse with cool water (cool water helps lock in conditioner to hair) FEEL YOUR PORES TALK!

11.   Ready for styling!

Now I gotta cook my chicken on the grill that's bee marinating all day yesterday and I got class at 12:30 so I don't have time to style my hair in a complex way. Its 9:23AM and I got about seven more minutes under this dryer to complete my deep conditioning. Therefore I am going to give this "wash N go" style a try!

My next product is The LOCK IT UP CREAM Tight Hold.

I use Tight Hold because my hair is very thick and coarse, if you have finer hair texture you may want to use the regular Lock It Up Cream which is much lighter.  Remember all of Taliah's products are moisture based/ water based products so you will never experience build up!

LOCK IT UP CREAM
-good for coils
-good for twists
-long term styles and sheen
-great for a wash and go but mix with healing oyl to make shiny -will not build up!

Cooking Pork Chops: Japanese Inspired!

Since I've returned home I am crazy excited to cook cook cook! I want to mend out all my mistakes and trials and errors here so that when I'm in Savannah my cooking will be spot on! My mom always keeps a lot of meat in the house in the freezer so I normally got a lot to work with. She has been eating much healthier now and I'm proud of that, but her methods lack excitement and daring combinations. So I coaxed into giving me money to buy some ingredients she wouldn't have in the house or think about buying. Mostly the Japanese stuff.

So my first meal was made Friday Night. I found a recipe for Wasabi-Panko crusted pork chops.
The hardest ingredient to find was the darn wasabi paste and I never did find the fennel seed. At any rate I managed to cook up a tasty meal. The pork chops and the panko did not stick very well even with the egg white coating. Next time I am going to leave the yoke in. There some type of adhesive like agent that goes missing when you take out the yoke. Frying was stealing my breading so I barely let the panko brown and I finished it off in the oven. While getting some color in the oven I made the wasabi-soy-ginger sauce that smelt amazing! I used real ginger instead of the powdered ginger and I think it gave it an interesting texture while still doing its job taste wise.

The final product did not look as pictured but it was mighty close! I paired my pork chops with a side of snow peas and matchstick carrots I chopped myself.

Going with this Japanese inspired theme I also made miso Soup for the first time! I was so proud of myself, it taste just like the ones in the restaurants! Thats the best feeling when you make something and match it to what you had or better it. In the online recipe the lady used: Dashi Seasoning, miso paste, tofu silken, and mushrooms, and green onion of course!
Tofu expired very quickly so I didn't want to buy it until I really knew i was going to make it. Plus I don't even like tofu, i was just afraid that without it would be missing something in its taste. Mushrooms are a no-no for me, I just don't do mushrooms. As for the dashi and miso paste it was no where to be found! The lady on YouTube suggested going to a restaurant and that's what I did.
I went to a nearby Japanese Hibachi steakhouse and proclaimed my love for miso and that I wanted to make it but I was missing the paste and the dashi. The man at the counter told me the only thing they put in their miso is the miso paste, tofu and Japanese seaweed. After looking at the miso paste and tasting the soup I think dashi was already in it or its just totally optional.

Anyway I got a huge tub of miso paste for $5 and a little cup of seaweed pieces on the house. Low and behold when I put the seaweed pieces in and the green onion (those are the last things to go in right before it reaches a rapid bowl.) the seaweed pieces unraveled to nice rectangular pieces of seaweed! i was so excited everything was looking so legit! Once the mixture boils remove it from the burner cause its done.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2 MY BLOG!

Looking back at some old posts I realized that This month June is when my blog was born.
My very first post I just updated was published on 6-8-2011.

This blog was my brothers idea, Solomon, The Sensible One, Child # 3. I was in Orlando when i was saying I wanted to record my life experiences now that I was going to college. I felt like a lot was going to happen and change and it would be a good time. He showed me how Blogger connected to my gmail and later when I got home I did it, created my first blog post.


Now that blogger has updated and google plus has come into existence I can widen my audience. Unfortunately I still only have 4 followers, YET I have at least 20 views a day, and when I'm being an active blogger I have at least 100views a day. Come on people why can't you commit?! lol. Its cool. I'm not hear to rack up the number of followers but to pour my heart out about things that define, effect, and shape me.

COILS! COILS! Natural Hair Coils

So coils are also known as comb curls. they utilize a curling comb that has small close in distance teeth and spirals your hair. Looking at coils on short hair I knew I wanted it but I was going to wait until the end of my time in Savannah so the style would last. The coils were cute but different at first. Alot of my hairstyles need to grow on me lol. I need a moment to take it in, and come up with something creative to wear with it or do to it later. My coils were like that. My hair dresser, Ms. Shawn was ready to kill me when I said I wanted coils because my hair is so long and so thick they would take her ages. But she loves me and she loves hair and she did them!! They were shorter then I expected but the tighter the coil the more is springs up on you.

Having coils has gotten me to experience life with short hair. For ONCE in my life I was NOT trying to show off the length of my hair but its texture! These springy coils were cute! And they only got cuter when I had my other hair stylist, Jabril UNcoil my hair. He cleaned my scalp with the Moisture Clenz and began breaking apart my coils making them smaller and finer and they began to get fuller. My greatest fear though was locking up! When my coils were intact everyone thought I was preparing to grow dreds and many ppl asked me how long I had been growing my dreads for and I'm like I DIDN'T start! Some even thought they were twist but when they got up close they could see that wasn't the case. They were juicy tight spirals and then juice tight but looser spirals!

Since then I returned to Florida with my coils. Perry loves it! Thinks its funky, loves the texture and how I look with it. My dad thought it was fun, my sis liked it alot! But my mom was not impressed. She thought it looked "nappy" -___-  and resembled unkept dreads. Ignoring her comments I continued styling my hair and having fun with it. Everyday people stopped me to say how pretty my hair is and how muuch they like it. I tried the Taaliah Waajid Style n shine white cream for kids hair that is great on edges and elongates ur curl pattern. BOY I tell you it worked! I thought my hair had to be straight to get flat edges all day but I was wrong! Uhh its so sexy and magical I love that stuff.

Today makes 2 days shy of me being home for 2 weeks straight. Saturday I used Moisture Clenz to clean my scalp and I went through all of my coils separating them. And during the week I used it about 3 times. Now that its the end of the week its like I never separated them but just made them smaller. That's the only hard thing with my hair being so thick every strand locks up soo quickly! I had a lot of product build up only on the spots where I went a little too happy go lucky with the style and shine cream. The build up looked like dandruff so I knew it was time to wash. My scalp was clean still from the cleansing I did last Saturday but I decided my hair would be washed today.

So DE-coiling the UNcoiled hair...
Scary, tangled, and very elasticity. The bad thing is that since my hair locks so quick I had a bunch of knots and lots of little pieces of hair falling out as I combed through the coils with my rubbery big teeth rake comb. With one small section left, I stopped to take a picture and when I rinsed my hair I noticed the water got dense in my palm. And then I put my wet hand in my hair to see if it would help and boy I tell ya it just got soft and silky smooth. The comb was gliding and no unnecessary hair was falling out. Taaliah's hair products are water based so the dry product in my hair from weeks ago when wet with water acted as if I just put fresh product in there! I redid all of my combed out parts and bantu knotted them up and out the way.

Totally beat from wrestling with my hair I am going to wash it tomorrow. Or really later today to be technical. Talent 72795

So I am a Talent with One Source Talent! Its great news and nervous news. OST is not a talent agency and don't claim to be. They are simply a service that provide industry benefits, support, exposure, and most importantly job opportunities! They did not bind me to a contract, and don't take any percentage from my earnings since they are not an agency. The only bad thing is that there was a start up fee that I'm not excited about but after googling them and reading all the nasty reviews, those reviews were backed by individuals who were very happy with their services. One testimonal got a paid gig with Pantene in her first month. A guy was in a featured film after less than a year with them. Parents were even vouching for them too. Everyone agreed the fee gave them cold feet but this company can't provide all of its services for free since they aren't taking profit from their talent.
Yes yes if you are that great it should all be free. But I'm not in this acting/modeling thing for a lifetime career. Its a hobby to me. It's fun, exciting, challenging, and a great side gig for money. And I am confident that with diligency I can quickly earn back that start up fee. I have actually already earned it back if I count my SCAD modeling check.
When I returned from the meeting where I signed and got accepted to the OST talents I was crying and scared that I was scammed. Fooled. But you know God doesn't make any mistakes and something good will come of this. Because my God doesn't want me to suffer but to learn, grow, and prosper. And therefore I am constantly checking my OST email and looking for castings that fit my criteria. Everything happened immediately with OST. After the fee was paid, photos were taken, and I was put on their website. That night I got a call and email saying there was a music video casting I qualified for with Ace Hood. I laughed OUT LOUD but it was nice to see how fast OST was finding jobs for me. The audition was suppose to be yesterday (wed) but it down poured and they never set a time for it... Oh well!

Since then I have applied to a hair show in Boca Raton that casting is on Friday. I am only looking at castings that pay me money lol, but it might be helpful to do a free gig in acting only because that is where I have no experience nor teaching. OST emailed me saying there were 4 castings that I qualified for. One of them is not paid with cash, but with a copy of the production. Its a theatre thing titled Geeks vs. Zombies... sounds kinda funny and cute so I am looking forward to it. If chosen it'll be over by August so thats alright I guess. While OST is working with me I am also still finding quick money modeling/casting things on craigslist but no luck there yet other than a screen testing I was invited to today but didn't go and might go to the nect one on sat.

These opportunities whether they are a no go or go are encouraging to me. I see them as God's way of chilling me out. He is letting me know that a plan is in place and I need to be patient and trust Him like I know I should.

The greatest benefit I think with OST is that since they are not an agency and a no-contract group I can always access them for work whenever I want to today, next month, or years from now. As long as I update my composite card with images of my recent look I'm all good!
